When I left Brazil I was sure I wasn't going back, with the kind of certainty you can only afford when you're young and it hasn't cost you anything yet, and I moved to Europe as though every bridge behind me had been burnt. I believed that what passes doesn't come back. It's an easy thing to believe when you're the one passing.
Almost ten years later, something itches. It doesn't argue, it whispers, and what it whispers is that I should go back running. This is saudade the way I understand it now, the suspicion that leaving was only ever half of the gesture, that you step out of a room partly so you can walk back into it. The bridges, it seems, were only out of sight.
I haven't gone back. I've just stopped saying I won't.
