Tulip Twins
I grew up an only child, and for most of that childhood I kept a sister in reserve. I could picture her clearly enough to miss her. I think I assumed that kind of closeness was something you were either born into or weren't, a matter of luck, and it didn't occur to me that it could arrive later, from several directions at once.
It arrived when I moved back to Lisbon for the second time. I hadn't gone looking for it, which was my biggest surprise. What I found here were women, and a way of being among women I'd had no practice in: a solidarity that asked very little and gave everything, a closeness that didn't have to be earned first. I watched them open, and at some point I noticed I was opening too.
Femininity has always been a difficult subject for me, which is probably why it keeps turning up in my work. I've painted it more easily than I've lived it. But there's a particular nourishment in the company of girlfriends, something close to the wonder you have as a child before you learn to be careful with it. In that company, being a woman became less a problem to solve and more a place I was simply standing in. - Antonia xx
