La Llorona

from €29.00

La Llorona took longer than anything else in the set, which seems right for a woman whose whole story is that she can't stop. She has been weeping by the water for centuries, and there's something matriarchal in that to me, a grief kept so long it has become a kind of authority. Her melancholy is one I know from home.

In Brazil we take saudade, sadness, pain, and make them into the most beautiful feeling in the world, so easily that from the outside it can look like nothing more than sorrow, and I think there's something very feminine in being able to do that, to sing with the whole weight still on you, to find the beauty inside the pain without first asking the pain to leave. Her story is told across Mexico to get children home before dark. I can't hear it as a warning, only as a measure of how long a woman can carry something before anyone thinks to call it strength.
